What Is an FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer)?

An FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer) is an engineer who works inside the customer’s operations, handling everything from understanding the problem to implementation and putting it to use. Rather than staying within a development department, an FDE works hands-on alongside the people on the front line.

Number X believes generative AI is only useful when built into the business. An FDE is the role that does that building on the front line. Companies in Japan and abroad are now hiring FDEs.

What is an FDE?

An FDE’s job is not just to receive specifications and build. Palantir’s job posting in Warsaw says that projects often begin with questions that have no set answers.

Another posting from the same company says it "pioneered" this role itself (this is the company’s own description, not a third-party account of its history). That posting also describes working on a customer’s problem until it becomes your own.

In a job posting from Channel Corp, the role is to work inside enterprise customers’ operations and advance adoption, implementation, and use of AI from the technical side. Feeding what is learned on the front line back into development is also part of the job.

Why FDEs are drawing attention with generative AI

Generative AI is not a tool you install and be done with. Number X’s view is that it becomes useful only when it is built into your own business and kept in a state where it can be used continuously.

People who understand the business and can also handle the technology go into the field. Number X sees this as the FDE model. Anthropic’s official job listings include Forward Deployed Engineer positions on the Applied AI team, as well as a management role for it.

In Japan, SoftBank is recruiting FDEs on its official hiring page, as a secondment to SB OAI Japan G.K. (as of October 21, 2026). The role is to serve as a technical lead in the use of LLMs and generative AI at leading Japanese companies. Channel Corp also lists "開発 - Forward Deployed Engineer(FDE)" in its job postings.

How it differs from SIers, SES, and consultants

We found no unified definition of how an FDE differs from an SIer, SES, or a consultant. What follows is Number X’s own breakdown.

In actual projects, roles may overlap, and they differ by company and project. Please take this as a rough comparison. The FDE column describes the way Number X aims to be involved.

How a project proceeds with an FDE

At Number X, an AI producer, a product manager, and an engineer join the front line as FDEs. An example of how work proceeds is the following five steps.

We handle generative AI adoption, business optimization, AI product development, proof of concept (PoC), and the design of usage rules and operating structures.

  1. STEP 1Clarify issuesWe listen to frontline work and challenges, and decide the use cases to tackle with AI.
  2. STEP 2Visualize workWe map the flow of work and separate what AI handles from what people judge.
  3. STEP 3Proof of concept (PoC)We try on a small scale and check the effects and issues.
  4. STEP 4Adopt and developWe introduce generative AI tools and, as needed, develop business tools and AI products.
  5. STEP 5Rollout and operationsWe prepare briefings and usage rules so your company can keep using it.

Number X’s FDE

We have three strengths. The first is to "listen, break down, and put it into words," an approach that combines an editor’s interviewing with project management.

The second is that members who are both executives and engineers work hands-on as FDEs. The third is that we bring AI we built and used heavily ourselves. At Cognify Lab., in which our members take part, we develop and operate 16 AI products.

Our member Shota Kamiyama (AI Engineer / AI Designer) has worked in web design and software engineering since 2007. He has also been involved in launching an entrepreneur development program and in new business development. For about two years he focused on researching and practicing AI use and AI system development, and today he works on hands-on AI adoption support, business optimization support, and AI product development support for companies. He is also the founder of QUON Inc.

We can also support introducing AI-driven development (development using AI coding tools) to development teams.

Frequently asked questions

How is an FDE different from an SE or an engineer?
We found no unified definition. Number X sees the difference as one of scope. Where SEs and engineers take on set phases or development, an FDE works inside the operations and stays involved from organizing the problem through adoption and use.
What kinds of companies is it suited to?
You can consult us before your problem has taken shape. Support starts with organizing the problem: we listen to frontline work and decide the use cases to tackle with AI. If you have an in-house development team, we can also support introducing AI-driven development.
How long will you be involved?
It depends on the problem and the scope. It differs between stopping at a PoC and going on to adoption, development, and rollout. We organize it to fit what you consult us about.
Is consultation free?
Yes, consultations are free. After hearing from you, we propose what to work on and a quote.
